Discover how different councils approach community engagement and make decisions. This session explores the key strategic planning processes, from Long-Term Plans (LTPs) to District Plans. We'll delve into the public consultation options available to Councils to develop transport, housing, land use, community facilities, and environmental planning, to ensure diverse voices come together to shape the future.

Elliot Weir
Elliot Weir was elected to the Otago Regional Council in 2022, at the age of 21. They are the co-chair of the Partnerships and Community Committee at ORC and have a keen interest in conservation and public transport. Elliot is finishing up their masters in ecology this year. They are also the interim treasurer of Dunedin Pride and the former features editor of Critic Te Ārohi. They are passionate about making Otago the best place to live - for te tāngata and everything else in Te Taiao.
Rohan O’Neill-Stevens
Rohan O’Neill-Stevens is a politician, activist, resource management commissioner, and campaigner. First elected to Nelson City Council in 2019, as its youngest ever councillor, they were appointed Deputy Mayor in 2022. Rohan is involved in a range of local and national organisations, with a focus on climate action, arts and creativity, urban development, indigenous self-determination, and youth engagement and development. They’ve worked extensively in bringing regional challenges into national discussions, and encouraging an intersectional, intergenerational approach to decision-making.
Joe Davis
I've committed to public service from Community Board to the Canterbury Regional Council. As Public Transport Lead (2022-2025), I've prioritised data-driven solutions, advancing the route 7 uplift, and continuing to advocate for a Rolleston-Christchurch-Rangiora passenger rail. I’ve pushed for digital democracy through livestreamed meetings and improved transparency. Currently, I'm establishing an AI Working Group. My decisions are guided by constituent mandate and thorough research working in service for the region.
Janelle Hinch
Ruapehu District Councillor Janelle Hinch is a fierce advocate for Ohakune and its youth. Through her business, Opus Fresh, she champions local retention and economic diversification. Having moved from Auckland over 20 years ago, Hinch is in her second term, dedicated to ensuring sustainable decisions for Ruapehu's future.
